Solar panel bird proofing closes the gap between your panels and the roof with mesh so pigeons cannot nest underneath. Our service clears out existing nests and droppings, washes the panels with pure water, then fits PVC-coated stainless mesh around the full perimeter of each array. The mesh clips to the panel frame, so nothing is drilled into the panels or roof.
Pigeons nest under solar panels because the gap is sheltered, warm and hard for predators to reach. Once they settle, nests and droppings build up under the array, nearby gutters block and the cooing and scratching often starts at dawn. Dried droppings can carry disease, so clearing them out needs proper protective equipment.
The best time is as soon as you notice pigeons landing on the roof and disappearing under the panel edge, before more birds settle in. Other signs are cooing or scratching early in the morning, twigs or feathers poking out from under the array, and droppings on panels, paths or sills below. The sooner mesh goes on, the smaller the clean-up underneath.
Bird proofing works by physically blocking the gap under the panels, so birds cannot get in to nest while air still circulates. We first remove nests and droppings and wash the panels, then fit stainless mesh along every side of the array and close off the corners. The mesh is held by clips on the panel frame rather than screws into the roof.

The price is based on the perimeter of your panel array, adjusted for storeys, so a larger or split array costs more than one compact row. Bird proofing a typical home takes around half a day. Larger or split arrays, two-storey or steep roofs and a heavy build-up of nests under the panels can make it longer. Your quote confirms the expected timing for your roof.
It is better not to, because it means working on the roof around live electrical equipment and handling dried droppings that can carry disease. Disturbing droppings without a mask and protective gear can put contaminated dust into the air you breathe. A professional installer should also check for native birds before closing gaps, as native birds and their nests are protected in NSW.

It is humane as well, because birds are excluded, never harmed or trapped.

Droppings stain panels, paths and cars, gutters near the panels block with nest material, and mites can appear near upstairs windows. The longer it goes on, the bigger the clean-up before mesh can be fitted.
Yes, panels still collect dust, salt and the odd dropping from birds landing on top, so cleaning as needed continues. The mesh stops nesting underneath but does not stop birds perching on the roof. Check the mesh along the array edges from the ground now and then, and let us know if a section looks damaged; our warranty is not tied to buying cleaning from us, and the written terms are on the Guarantees page.

The pigeons nesting under Sydney solar panels are usually feral (introduced) pigeons. Native birds and their nests are protected in NSW, so if we find one we stop and advise you before any work continues.
