How often should you clean your gutters in Sydney?

Most Sydney homes need their gutters cleaned once or twice a year. If gums, plane trees or jacarandas hang over your roof, plan on every three to four months. If you live near bushland, clean them before every bushfire season, whatever else you do. The trees around your home matter far more than the calendar.

No official rule sets a cleaning frequency for every home. The guide below is our rule of thumb, not an industry standard. It covers when to book, the warning signs that you're overdue, and how gutter guard, flat roofs and strata change things.

A rule of thumb for Sydney homes

• Few or no trees nearby: once a year, ideally in late winter or spring.
• Some trees in your yard or next door: twice a year, once after autumn leaf fall and again before summer.
• Overhanging gums, jacarandas or plane trees: every three to four months, or consider gutter guard.
• Near bushland: before every bushfire season, then check again through summer.

If more than one of these fits your home, go with the shortest interval.

Trees matter more than the calendar

Different trees fill gutters in different ways, and many Sydney streets have a mix.

• Gum trees drop leaves, bark and twigs all year round, not just in autumn. In reviews we read, Sydney homeowners with mature gums describe heavy leaf and branch drop, plus bark shedding in season. Long strips of bark can lie across a gutter and hold back a dam of leaves.
• Plane trees drop most of their large leaves over autumn. Once wet, the leaves mat together into a dense layer.
• Jacarandas drop small leaflets and, in late spring, masses of purple flowers. Both break down into a fine sludge that is good at blocking downpipes.

One Sydney customer described a roof under "plane trees, a jacaranda and a golden robinia" that "collects lots of debris right throughout the year". With a mix like that, a single clean each year is rarely enough.

The best times of year to book in Sydney

• Late autumn to early winter, once most of the deciduous leaves are down.
• Late winter to spring, before bushfire season. The NSW Government's advice for preparing your home is direct: "Clean your gutters of debris." Our bushfire season gutter checklist covers the rest of the roof.
• Before the summer storm season, so downpipes can cope with heavy downpours.

Spring is also when demand seems to peak. Airtasker's gutter cleaning cost guide reports its highest seasonal average price in spring and its lowest in autumn. Booking in late winter can give you more choice of dates.

Signs your gutters need cleaning now

You don't have to wait for the next scheduled clean. Book sooner if you notice any of these:

• water spilling over the front of the gutter during rain instead of running to the downpipe
• streaks or water stains on the fascia, eaves or walls below the gutter
• grass, weeds or seedlings growing out of the gutter
• leaves poking over the gutter edge, visible from the ground
• a gutter sagging or pulling away under the weight of wet debris
• a downpipe that gurgles, trickles or barely flows in heavy rain
• birds nesting on the roof, or pigeons moving in under your solar panels

Overflowing gutters are more than untidy. Water can spill into the eaves and walls and back up under the roofline.

Does gutter guard change the schedule?

Guard helps, but it doesn't remove the need for cleaning. Fine debris, dust and small leaves still get through, and leaves can sit on top of the mesh. Most homes with guard can go longer between cleans. They still need a yearly check and, from time to time, a clean underneath.

Flat roofs, two storeys and strata

• Flat roofs and box gutters hold water and debris, and a blockage can back water into the building quickly. One Sydney customer with a flat roof described having their gutters done on a six-monthly contract.
• Two-storey homes don't need cleaning more often. They are just harder to check from the ground, so problems go unnoticed for longer. Ask for before-and-after photos of every section.
• Strata and townhouse complexes usually treat roofs and gutters as common property, so cleaning is normally arranged through the owners corporation. Talk to your strata manager, or see how we work with strata and property managers.

Keeping it on schedule without climbing a ladder

The safest check is from the ground. Walk around the house during or just after heavy rain and look for overflow, drips behind the gutter and downpipes that aren't running.

Please don't climb up to check. SafeWork NSW has published an incident in which a worker doing gutter cleaning slid down a residential roof and fell about five metres. That was a working tradesperson, not a first-timer. We explain the risks in why DIY gutter cleaning is risky.

Two habits make a schedule easy to keep:

1. Use the photos. Ask for before-and-after photos at each clean. If the gutters are packed every time, shorten the interval. If they're barely half full, you can probably stretch it.
